Picking up wild mushrooms is one activity why I look forward to Autumn; otherwise,to be honest, I don't particularly love the season as such. In fact, I find the damp and chilly weather really sad and depressing.
Autumn is the season when the woods and the meadows fill up with varied wild mushrooms that taste like heaven. As I live by the countryside, I always make it a point to go out for a walk with a bag or a basket. Last week, I came back with at least four kilos of penny buns also known as ceps. Now I have close to 10 jars of mushrooms preserved in my kitchen -- quite a treat!
For those who aren't very experienced at this, do remember that it is quite important to watch what you pick; there are several poisonous varieties of mushrooms growing out there. Stay away from species such as the devil's bolete, the destroying angel, the sickener, and the poison pie as they get their names for a very good reason.
